David Matthews is a shareholder of the firm specializing in real estate matters. David represents Gap, H&M, Polo Ralph Lauren, Ulta, Charlotte Russe and other national retailers in negotiating leases and resolving real estate disputes for locations throughout the country. In addition, David represents local and national financial, industrial and development clients in the acquisition, development, leasing and disposition of properties, including loan workouts and lease restructuring.Prior to joining BartkoZankel, David was Associate General Counsel for Gap Inc.'s Real Estate Law Department, where he was integrally involved in both new store development, from letter of intent through store construction, as well as property management of the existing fleet. During his 10-year tenure at Gap Inc., David negotiated thousands of leases and real estate-related documents. He played a key role in developing Gap Inc.'s leasing policies and real estate practices, and has experience handling a wide range of retail real estate-related disputes, including co-tenancy violations, late delivery fees, and construction disputes.
Before his career with Gap Inc., David worked for five years in the Real Estate Group of Morrison & Foerster, one of San Francisco's largest law firms, where he represented creditors and borrowers in secured financing and workouts; commercial landlords and tenants in retail and office leasing transactions; and building owners and developers in acquisition, management and disposition of real property.
